I can't get to the phone before it goes to voicemail. I understand that the number of rings the caller hears is controlled by my carrier, Verizon. My husband has a Samsung Galaxy S7 purchased from Verizon and when he calls, he hears 8 rings then it goes to VM. Note that I called Verizon and they set it to 8 rings, the maximum available.
You don't need an app to record your calls with the 3-way calling described above. There are several paid services that let you call them direct to get the recording going before you pull in the other party. This also means you're not limited to iPhone only—they'll work with an Android phone, or even a landline.
You can also delete messages without having to dial into the normal voicemail system. Unfortunately, UK networks have been slow to adopt Visual Voicemail, and it currently just seems to be O2, EE and Orange that offer it to iPhone users.
