If you don’t know what to say in your voicemail, here’s a few pointers to get you started: Make sure that you’re not yelling into the phone and the message is recorded in a somewhat quiet area. If the message is for work, try to keep it professional and avoid mistakes, if possible. If you’re working in retail, apologize for not picking up and note that you will call them back. Regardless of your occupation, try to keep the message short. It shouldn’t be longer than 25 seconds. If the voicemail is personal, feel free to leave a silly, short message that lets the caller know it’s you.
Offer other contact information such as a cell phone or email address if you will check it (i.e. on vacation). DON’T: Be too informal, even if you are creating a humorous message. Give a prolonged sales pitch in your voicemail greeting message. Waste a caller’s time with an excessively long greeting before they can leave their message.

Note that if your phone rings for any longer than a specified period (15 seconds in default), any re-direction feature that you have activated, such as voicemail or call forwarding, will come into effect. Now, back to those special memories. If you find yourself listening to an old voicemail over and over — for sentimental reasons or otherwise — don't bet on your phone to save it for you indefinitely.
