Customer experience is today’s business battleground. At a time where it’s common for even the most established businesses to deliver poor service, incompetent support, and just outright bad communication, how do you stand out? As big companies fail in the customer experience department, doors open for small business owners and entrepreneurs to distinguish themselves.
Jessica Sheehan agrees. She heads social media for JPMorgan Chase and was one of the employees opting to get rid of voice mail. Everyone she works with already knows the best way to reach her is on Twitter, Facebook, instant message or text — even her mom.

One feature of Voice Mail Message Notification Preferences will change in the updated platform—there will no longer be options for the disposition of voice messages related directly to message notification. Instead, messages will be kept as new even though the message may be delivered to an email address.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Chances are, that voicemail that you’ve recorded and deleted thirty times has been just fine. Your main goal is not to get in the way of the caller leaving a message, which is exactly what can happen if you overthink it or drone on too long.
However, Hinze says that the way businesses use voicemail has changed radically. What once meant a constantly clogged answering machine is now a service that almost always involves the incorporation of more modern functions like automated message transcription. For customers picking up a phone after your normal hours of operation, rather than going to your website, voicemail greetings can keep them apprised of business hours, brief company news items and other critical information.
Don’t Get Creative With Your Voicemail Messages—Many high profile sales trainers advise you to leave all kinds of crazy messages on your voicemail as a way to stand out. What I find is that most of the people who try to do something creative with their voicemail messages end up sounding corny. In fact, seldom do creative off the wall voicemail messages make a positive impression on me. If you want to be viewed as a professional, then make sure your greeting presents you as one.
We'll take you through the five most professional voicemail greetings. This will include how to structure different parts of your voicemail, as well as things to avoid.

If someone is listening to your voicemail greeting it's only because they intend to leave you a message. Don't make them listen to 3 minutes of rambling in order to do so. Plus, you're more likely to deliver a clean, professional read if you stick to shorter greetings. If more specific information is needed, direct callers to where they can find it on your website.
Last but not least a slogan or branding: this is really more important for new customers and people that are calling or leaving a voicemail for the first time rather than returning ones (though it helps a little with them too!). A catchy phrase makes it easier for people to remember your name and recognize you when you give them a call back.
Identify yourself. A professional greeting is also personal. Speak your name, job title and company name within your message. But be conscious, you do not want to record a lengthy message.
“Hello, you’ve reached [X company]. Unfortunately, we’re currently unavailable. But we want to talk to you — so please leave your name and number, as well as your reason for calling, and someone will call back ASAP.” “Hi, you’ve reached [company]. We’re available by phone from [hour] to [hour] [time zone] Monday through Friday [optional: and from hour to hour on the weekends]. Leave your name and number, and we’ll return your call straight away.”
Even in today's fast-paced world, customers don't like being greeted with an automated message. According to the New York Times, callers of a certain age are put off entirely if they are answered by a voicemail instead of a real person.
