Little things like a great voicemail can really set you apart from your competition. Think about it. Would you be more inclined to want to interview someone who is shouting about how much they hate calling people back, or the person who simply asks you to leave a message? Andrea (she/her) is our head of PR at Snagajob, where sheâs focused on telling the world how we help hourly workers and employers. Her first hourly job was as a lifeguard.
Many businesses want to sound professional and, as a result, end up creating boring, monotonous, and overly generic messages such as: âHi, this is Joe. Iâm either on the phone or away from my desk. Please leave me a message.â

Note that the secretary has asked for the reason for calling so she can prioritize the patients who need the most help. Sheâs also keeping it short and to the point.
Don' let background noise do the talking for you. Ambient noise on your recording could be sending the wrong message to your clients. The sound of your kids arguing in the distance could be the sign of a distracting work environment. Clinking glasses and restaurant chatter may leave the impression that you don't take your work seriously. When you record your voicemail greeting choose a quiet spot free from interruption, so your message is the only thing callers hear. It's also good to avoid large, cavernous spaces where sound verberates.
Expand your message with 'We're sorry we couldn't take your call this time.' The inclusion of 'this time'Â or 'on this occasion' suggests that the voicemail is the exception rather than the rule.
