I hate to date myself, but I was around back in the day when there were no electronic tools used to answer the telephone.
Mine goes something like this: "Hello, you have reached the confidential voicemail of (my name) at (my practice). If this is an emergency please hang up and dial 911otherwise please stay on the line and leave leave your name, phone number, and reason for your call I will return your call as soon as I can.
If they are calling without an expectation that you always pick up (such as if you are a business coach or a one-man shop) then thanking them for calling might make the most sense.
Weren’t these messages funny and wacky for your machine. Of course, you have to be a bit careful as to what you say and record on your machine.
