Many busy businesses utilize auto attendant greetings to make a great first impression, however, if your business relies on the personal touch of a live receptionist, it is important to have a plan in place when that position is unstaffed. Make sure your voicemail greeting contains the useful information that your receptionist would normally provide. This could include: location & directions, office hours, website URL, or social media info, as well as any pertinent company information.

In my (US-based) experience, doctor offices & the like have a place where you can fill out if they can leave messages or not (and some even have asked detailed messages vs callback messages), so that's my perspective! And that I can set different things for different numbers. So my cell phone they can leave detailed messages on any matter, my mother's house phone is detailed from billing only and otherwise callback, her cell phone is callback only. (And they also aren't allowed to tell her anything other than billing, so even if she does call them back about anything else! That was just a measure set up when I lived with her one summer & had no cell reception at her house.)

Sorry I wasn’t able to take your call, but please leave your name and a detailed message and I’ll get back to you.
Be brief. Don’t make your listener resent you for leaving a 5 minute long message. People are busy. Listening to 5 minute phone messages is not on the top of their priorities and wastes their time. Many callers seem to think they are the only person in the world leaving a voicemail for a particular person. Yet a dozen other people feel the same way and a man ends up holding the phone to his ear for an hour.
We actually know a top insurance sales guy who did a sales motivational message every day just like this, and people used to call just to listen to his thoughts.
