Often times knowing the purpose of their calls allows me to respond to their messages by sending them emails. As an example, when people have a question, often times I can send them an email answering their question. Expand your opening to with 'Thank you for calling [insert company/individual name]' or 'You've reached the voicemail of [insert company/individual name]'. This personal touch goes a long way towards building a rapport even when you're not available to answer the call directly.
Your voicemail says it all when it comes to missed calls. Therefore, a professional greeting is key when people leave you a message. People will form an opinion about your style of work just by listening to the quality of your voicemail greeting. And remember, always listen to your voicemail greeting when you finish recording to make sure it's acceptable.
Your caller may have other competitors in mind; however, a polite and open-sounding voicemail may sway them in your direction.
