You definitely should not ever record a business voicemail longer than 30 seconds, and anything less than 10 seconds will typically mean that you are either speaking too quickly or aren’t providing all of the required information.

If you are on vacation/out of the office, be sure to record a special message to let people know when you left and when you are expected back.
Write down your message before you record it. When reading it back, ask yourself: Does it make sense? Does it contain the right information? Is it grammatically correct? Is it clear? Is it positive and polite?
